Short Boxing (ep 1)

Just digging through an old short box of comics, pulled a few memories out:

Star Wars #24 (1979): The first comic I ever bought, off a spinner rack at Newark Airport. “Ben Kenobi Fights Alone!” Written by Mary Jo Duffy, pencils by Carmine Infantino, inks by Bob Wiacek, and lettered by none other than Rick Parker! Read this one 5000 times!

Marvel Fanfare #6 (1983): Wasn’t much of a Marvel reader at the time, but MF really drew me in. I liked not having to really know anything about what was going on in the regular books. Also, what was, at the time, great printing. Got this one just for the cover, by one of my first and most enduring inspirations, P. Craig Russell.

Marvel Fanfare #40 (1988): An absolute gem by writer Ann Nocenti with art by (post Born Again) David Mazzuchelli. If this came out today, it would still look fresh and ground-breaking.

Night Music #3 (1985): I bought all the random P. Craig Russell comics I could ever find. I would never have guessed this beautiful, graceful, perfect linework could grow out of the less refined work we saw in Killraven only a few years earlier. Both inspirational and intimidating at the same time.

JLA (P)Resents: Plastic Man #1 (1999): Chock full of great stuff in a series of shorts featuring Ty Templeton penciling, writing, inking and even lettering along with Rick Burchett and others. Edited by Tony Bedard, no less, my former colleague from Valiant Comics back-in-the-day!
